Evergood Project: Blueberry Agricultural Development

Located in the district of Poroto, Province of Trujillo, Department of La Libertad, Peru.

Blueberries are a group of species native to the northern hemisphere, they belong to the Ericaceae family, the same family as azaleas and rhododendrons. The species of greatest commercial interest are Vaccinium corymbosum L. (highbush blueberry) and Vaccinium ashei (rabbit eye blueberry).

The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of blueberries benefit heart health and protect it. Blueberries have also been shown to protect against cardiovascular disease, lower cholesterol, lower blood pressure, protect against stroke, and reduce oxidative stress. They also prevent heart attacks.

The fruit of the blueberry is a spherical berry that can vary from 1 to 2 cm in diameter, with an intense blue color and a characteristic waxy epidermis.

The greater post-harvest durability that the blueberry presents with respect to other berries (raspberry, boysemberry, strawberry), of up to thirty days, is given by the consistency of the fruit and its waxy cuticle (epicarp).

The main destinations for Peruvian blueberry exports are: the United States, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, China and Hong Kong.

The main blueberry producing regions in Peru are: La Libertad, Lambayeque, followed by Lima, Ica, Ancash, Piura, Moquegua, and Huánuco.
